10. Tenancy fraud
Tenancy fraud happens when someone lives in a social housing property they are not legally entitled to. This can include:
- Subletting the property without permission
- Not living in the property as their main or only home
- Providing false information to obtain a tenancy
- Passing on the tenancy to someone else without consent
- Using false documents during the application process
Tenancy fraud is not a victimless crime. It reduces the number of homes available for people in genuine need and can lead to overcrowding, longer waiting lists, and increased costs for housing providers and taxpayers.
At Soho Housing we take tenancy fraud seriously. We are committed to:
- Investigating all reports of suspected fraud
- Working with local authorities, the police, and other partners to take action
- Reclaiming properties that are being misused so they can be re-let to those in need
- Raising awareness among residents and staff about how to spot and report fraud
If you suspect tenancy fraud, you can report it confidentially. You don’t need to give your name, and all information will be treated in strict confidence. Email us on housing@sohoha.org.uk or call us on 0207 557 7400.
Together, we can protect our homes and ensure they go to the people who need them most.
